Utah Greco & Freestyle State Championships

6 of our SC Warrior Wrestlers (and 1 future Warrior = 7 total) participated in the Utah Greco & Freestyle State Championships over the weekend of July 17-18, 2020. Out of 171 teams listed in the registration for the Freestyle division, our wrestlers scored enough points to finish in the #22 spot. #22 out of 171!

Because of the Covid-19 quarantine earlier this year, Spring Wrestling was shut down throughout the nation. Our state and local leaders allowed USA Wrestling Utah to hold this event in Farmington, Ut., and event organizers opened this up to surrounding states for the good of our sport.

*This tournament is normally the qualifying tournament for our Utah National Team for Fargo Nationals and other National Championship Tournaments. Since Fargo Nationals was cancelled this year, this tournament was not a Nationals Qualifier, so unfortunately, some of our top ranked Utah wrestlers chose to not participate. This tournament did however feature many top ranked participants from surrounding states and was a very tough tournament.

Since other states competed, the following criteria was used to determine the state champion from Utah:

"The highest placing Utah wrestler will be crowned the Utah State Champion. We will wrestle for a true Utah State Champion if the top 2 Utah placers have not wrestled each other."

​Many health precautions were put in placed and enforced (no hand shaking, masks for all spectators/coaches/wrestlers not on the mat wrestling, social distancing for spectators, etc.). This made the event very unique and memorable. We are grateful that our wrestlers were able to compete.

In the Greco Roman Style of Wrestling on Friday July 17, 2020, the following wrestlers representing our home town placed in the top 6 in their respective age and weight divisions:

12U (born 2008-2009)
95 lb - Preston Lang 5th place (3rd out of Utah participants)

16U (born 2004-2005)
113 lb - Edgar Renteria 5th place (2nd out of Utah participants)
195 lb - Vince Threlfall 2nd place (1st out of Utah participants)

Junior (9th-12th Grade)
113 lb - Brannon Wilson 3rd place (1st out of Utah participants)
195 lb Carson Hansen 6th place (2nd out of Utah participants)

In the Freestyle tournament on Saturday July 18, 2020, the following wrestlers representing our home town placed in the top 6 in their respective age and weight divisions:

12U (born 2008-2009) 
95 lb - Preston Lang 5th place (3rd out of Utah participants)

16U (born 2004-2005) 
113 lb - Edgar Renteria 5th place (1st out of Utah participants)
